LITERATURE -IN-ENGLISH - POETRY- JAMB Revision

The word "Literature" is derived from a Latin word "Literra" which means :formed with letters".

It is any form of art put in writing that expresses thoughts or feelings of the original author/port -an imaginative form of writing. It consists of both oral and written forms. 

Ancient Egyptian literature and Sumerian literature were considered the world's oldest literary forms. Some old Greek writings were written on clay tablets. (Sand)

POETRY

A form of literature that conveys a thought, scene or story -using lyrical arrangement of words. They may have rhyme or rhythm, or be in a "free form".

Arrangement of a poem can be in stanzas just like a music verse. Different types of stanzas exist. 

TYPES OF POEMS

SONNET

The word is coined from " Sonnus"  meaning "sound". It is a poem of 14 lines with a constant rhyme scheme and structure. 

ODE 

An ode is a poem written by a poet to express a thought/feeling  about a particular person or subject. It usually contains an outpouring of praise, consisting of 3 sections/stanzas.

ELEGY

A sad form of poetry reflecting on death/passing of a person. It expresses - mourning, sorrow, redemption/solace.

BALLAD 

A form of poetry that is musical . It usually consists of 4 line stanzas. It is usually sung or recited. Dialogues, word repetition, rhythm and rhyme are usually used. 

EPIC 

A long narrative poem, differentiated by theme, tone and style. It celebrates heroic deeds and important events. It usually talks about the adventures of a hero -like a superhuman/divine figure.
