DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH (ENGLISH)

 DIRECT SPEECH

In a direct speech, the writer states the exact words of the original  speaker, usually followed by a comma and inside quotation marks (also known as inverted commas) 

Example :

The President of Nigeria said, " I urge all citizens to be of good behavior during the ramadan period"

INDIRECT SPEECH 

In an indirect speech, the writer gives the words of the original speaker as reported  by someone else. It is introduced by a verb  in the past tense. 

Example:

The minister said that the price of Cocoa was rising. 

HOW TO CHANGE DIRECT TO INDIRECT SPEECH (Rules) 

* Change First and Second Person pronouns ( I, We, You) to third person pronouns (he, she they) 

* Change present tense to past tense

Example:

  has becomes had

are becomes were

May becomes might 

* Words that indicate time and place become words of distance or remoteness. (Closeness

Example :

Now becomes then

This becomes that 

Yesterday becomes the day before
